Vaccinophobes' Brains Are in Iron Lungs

When I arrived as a medical student at New York's PresbyterianHospital, in 1980, there were three or four giant rolling steel cylinders on several of the patient floors. Overwhelmed with everything else I was acclimating to, I didn't question the presence of these anachronisms. I was just trying to survive, and if they wanted to keep Jules Verne's torpedo tubes on the floor, that was fine...as long as I didn't have to learn how to load and fire them.

That, of course, was wishful thinking, because as a student, I was the lowest man on the totem pole (actually I was on that part of the totem pole that was imbedded in the ground), and, eventually, I had to do everything...so, one day I was instructed to attend to an elderly lady who, I was told, was in the tube.

That's when I asked my source of all information (the ward nurse) what in hell was going on. She filled me in. The torpedo tube was an iron lung. The patient lies inside the tube, except for her head, and a pump creates pressure changes in the tube that physcially expand and contract the chest, helping the patient breathe.

These were the last few iron lungs in the city, and probably in the country, and were kept at Presbyterian simply because there were a few people who had been using them throughout their lives and were loath to change.

But iron lungs -- once ubiquitous in hospital wards (see above photograph)-- actually became relics of an era gone by because of the polio vaccine which mostly eradicated the major cause of paralytic weakness of the respiratory muscles: POLIO.

Iron Lungs Making a Comeback?

Is the world free of polio? Not yet. Although we might be if it weren't for Vagans and their ilk (see my previous post on Vagans). International workers who have been struggling since 1988 to completely eradicate polio via vaccination ran into a snag last year when a state in Nigeria banned the vaccine out of fear that it causes AIDS and infertility. The polio vaccine ban lead (*duh*) to a resurgence of cases and now the disease has spread to 12 contiguous African nations.

In the United States similar misinformation about vaccines is spread by the Vagans and already we are seeing resurgences of diseases long thought controlled by proper vaccination programs.

Of course the American Vagans are displaying ignorance no coarser than the Nigerians, and one wonders the best way to make the point about vaccination importance and rational decisions regarding its use. Some bloggists are championing rational thinking about the problem, and they should be read regularly.

A Torpedo Tube for Every Vagan

I have a new idea, We should start a fund to buy old iron lungs (they must be available on ebay) and we will deliver one iron lung to every Vagan with instructions on how to use the machines on their Vaganitic children after the kids contract polio. That is, if their children survive mumps, measles, pertussis, diphtheria, hepatitis B, the flu, chickenpox, smallpox, pneumococcal pneumonia, and the one disease we cannot vaccinate against: obdurate ignorance.

Some historian ought to be interviewing folks like you (on the horror of the iron lung) parents of children born before about 1950 (on the terror of the annual polio epidemics) and the relatives of persons who died miserably of diseases that are now preventable.

The vagans say, "Oh, Whooping Cough is just a nuisance"--we need a video of some child whooping and vomiting FOR HOURS and make the idjits watch it.

I remember how miserable I was with measles. It may be that what I remember is that I was forbidden to read for several days (in a darkened room etc.)

Me, I'm proud to be a member of the reality-based community. I can think my way out of a paper bag.

What fries my chops about Vagans (and I'm related to one) is (1) refusing to look at the evidence therefore requiring more $$$ be poured down the rathole of proving no connection between autism and vaccination (2) endangering other people by refusing to vaccinate.

I saw a beautiful eight year old girl die miserably -- on a respirator, septic, drowning in an unstoppable deluge of lung infection and hemorrhage -- as a complication of chicken pox. It should be made into a documentary with those who choose NOT to vaccinate made to watch (can we get Michael Moore?)before filling out the forms. They need to understand they are playing a game of odds, and if the wrong number comes up one loses in a tragic way.
